Benefit plan audits are a niche practice, and can present different and unique challenges to the auditor. Louis Plung & Company currently performs more than 30 benefit plan audits, ranging in size from approximately 100 participants to more than 8,000. Our benefit plan clients range in size from small, privately-owned businesses to large, multi-million dollar global corporations. We perform audits for the following types of benefit plans:

  • Defined benefit
  • Defined contribution, such as 401(k) and 403(b)
  • Deferred compensation
  • Single employer/Multi-employer
  • ESOP
  • DOL/ERISA
  • Master trust
  • Compliance audits
  • Service organization audits (previously SAS 70 audits)

Generally, smaller benefit plans are not able to employ full-time plan administrators, so the responsibility is given to an employee with other roles and duties. In these situations, it is helpful for the client to work with accounting professionals who are experienced in benefit plans. Our focus is on educating the plan administrator so they understand the areas of risk within their plan, and we also help them identify potential red flag situations.

Our firm is a member of AICPA’s Employee Benefit Plan Audit Quality Center, which was formed to promote quality employee benefit plan audits. Membership is firm-based and voluntary.
